DEBBIE

I waited till after dinner when Susie was sitting, nursing a glass of wine. I absolutely had to ask her about George’s clothes but I had to wait till Steve was well out of earshot. I could see Jim throwing me some querying glances over dinner. I wasn’t sure if he wanted to know more about what I had already said about the clothes or if he thought I had lost the plot completely. I didn’t care anymore. I felt like I was losing my mind and I was the only one who was able to save it.

Finally, everyone else had retired or gone to the living-room. Susie and I sat alone. Susie seemed to be in a world of her own, twirling her glass so the wine ran around the edges and watching it fall back in again.

‘Did George lend Steve some clothes?’ I asked quietly.

‘Why would he lend Steve clothes?’ Susie shrugged.

‘It’s just I saw him with some and I think they were George’s.’

Susie frowned and looked at me for what felt like a long time before turning away and taking a long swig of her wine. ‘You’re getting very involved there,’ she said after a while. ‘Are you sure you’re getting involved in the right places? Maybe there’s other things you need to turn your attention to. Or maybe you think you’re too smart or sophisticated or something, but right under your nose might be a good place to start.’

Susie got suddenly up and marched back into the house. I could hear her clatter around the kitchen. I stayed where I was, trying to figure out what Susie had just said to me. Is she just drunk or is she trying to tell me something?

With Susie still clattering around inside, I decided to get away from the house. I needed time to think. I walked out till I was away from the light of the house. At the same time, I didn’t want to go too far because the light was fading.

Susie’s words were ringing in my ears but I also thought back to Steve’s words and his behaviour from earlier. There was more than a hint of menace in his tone.

Looking back in at the house, I thought how little I knew about what was actually going on. Those first impressions I had of Brenda and Steve had been turned on their head. Brenda had seemed to have something against George from the outset. He could certainly be very annoying, even obnoxious at times, but then I thought Brenda had seemed to overreact to him. Then Susie had said that strange thing about knowing something from the past. Was that between George and Brenda or was Steve involved as well? But what was it? Susie was drunk but she had appeared pretty definite in what she was saying.

My eyes were becoming accustomed to the dim light. Somehow the lakeshore seemed like a safer place than inside the house. I felt the chill of the cool air
